The Design Side

Wednesday, February 21st, 2007

I don’t do design too much, but enough to get my hands a bit dirty. I kinda enjoy it, although I rarely get really inspired works that look amazing. So I mostly stick to programming. However, this funny post of “23 Signs That You’re Becoming a Design Geek” has some funny things that mostly only designers will understand. Thanks to Leo and Amber for pointing this out on their enjoyable podcast along with the rest of fun links for geeks.

The Best Super Bowl XLI (2007) Commercials

Tuesday, February 6th, 2007

After reviewing most of the commercials another time, I decided that these are my favorites:

#1: The fan-made Doritos commercial. Brilliant.

#2: “The Fist Bump” is so last year. Even Matt can be seen on Google Chat slapping me.

#3: Everyone was pulling for the poor factory robot.

#4: Coca-Cola redeems GTA

#5: But he has an axe!

Bill Gates and Windows Vista with Jon Stewart

Wednesday, January 31st, 2007

A couple people have been checking out the brand new Windows Vista. So what do I think? It’s too bad that Jon Stewart didn’t get Bill Gates’ password:

The Planets on Google Maps

Tuesday, January 23rd, 2007

So it came to 11pm and I still didn’t have anything for this morning… so why not go with something Google but something a bit obscure?

You may know that they updated Google Earth recently. But did you know that Google has also mapped out the Moon and Mars already too? They’re fun for at least a couple minutes.

Cingular and AT&T Explained

Thursday, January 18th, 2007

Corporate buyouts can be so darn confusing. This week’s example is Cingular, which bought out AT&T Wireless a couple years ago to become the largest provider. Apparently the big news of this week is that Cingular is now going to be merged back into the AT&T brand. To tell us how this works, here is the ever-humorous Stephen Colbert:

This Is Premium Joke, No?

Two-thirds of the way through the amazing movie Everything Is Illuminated, this conversation happened soon after Peter walked in:

Peter: This movie doesn’t make any sense.
Me: That’s because you didn’t watch the first part of it.
Peter: That’s what people say about every movie.
Me: Yeah, and that’s probably why they made the first part of the movie as well as the end — so it makes sense.

Oh well, I thought it was funny at the time. If you want something better than my jokes, just pick up a copy of Cars this week. I know I did.

Break The Spell Of The Typical

Tuesday, May 30th, 2006

Since posting YouTube short videos is so fun, here’s yet another that I found really hilarious:

I find Wes Anderson to be on of the most brilliant filmmakers, although many of you don’t get him because his brand of humor is very satirical. This short film/commercial totally encapsulates Wes Anderson.

A great thing is how Amercian Express has embraced the popular but often misunderstood filmmaker to support their product. Every Wes Anderson fan thinks this thing is awesome, so they’ll be imimediately predisposed to American Express.

Although, I know movie makers use American Express, but how many of my friends use American Express credit cards? Absolutely none. “None more black.”

Promise To Keep It Innovative

Sunday, May 21st, 2006

One of my favorite muses, John Reuben, has released another amazing video work. No, it’s not an addictive music video, but this time it’s an amazing short documentary. Check out out right here:

He’s serious. He’s professional. He’s inspiring. He’s my hero.

We Are All A Little Crazy

Tuesday, May 16th, 2006

Last week found Google’s release of Google Trends. It shows the popularity of a search term over time, plus allows you to plot more than one next to each other. If you’re trying to set up a Google AdWords campaign, it might come in handy.

But what about us casual searchers? Don’t worry, there’s lots of fun to be found. My friend Bjorn found some really interesting comparisons. Of course, none of these are to be taken at face value. There’s no game called “Virtue City” or a TV show called “God and the City”. ;-)

They’ll Know Us By The Way We Point And Stare

A Field Guide To Evangelicals by Joel KilpatrickI assumed it was just a joke. (Well, hey, the rest of the stuff on LarkNews.com is a joke, so why would I think it’s serious?) But even Amazon.com proves it’s true because you can buy it.

The authors of LarkNews have released A Field Guide to Evangelicals & Their Habitat. It looks like a invaluable book should you ever encounter full-on Evangelicals. I mean, it preaches the truth: that I am going to hell, apparently (along with the rest of Catholics and the Pope). Just check out the handy chart that was reprinted at Shlog.com.
